President-elect Trump’s emphatic promise of new tariffs is sharpening the debate over how he will handle the economy. It’s likely the single most important domestic issue of his second term. Trump is poised to enjoy almost perfect timing in taking the reins of an economy on the rise.

Trump said in a post to Truth Social on Monday that one of his first executive orders would be to hit Mexico and Canada with a blanket 25% tariff. Mexico and Canada are the second and third top suppliers of goods to the U.S., according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. The U.S. imports the most goods from China.

The Mexican president and Trump have given dramatically different versions of the call Wednesday. Trump said on his Truth Social platform that she had agreed to “stop Migration through Mexico.”
