An asteroid first observed in late December 2024 is on track to pass by or collide with Earth in December 2032.

At the end of 2024, astronomers detected an asteroid in the night sky. It was given the designation Y, since it was discovered in the last half of December, and R4 since it was the 117th rock to be found in the last couple of weeks of December,

This asteroid has a 2.3% chance of hitting Earth. That's nearly double the percentage reported earlier this month. But experts say it's still not a huge concern – there's still a 97.7% chance it misses the planet entirely.
