An attack on an open market in the Sudanese city of Omdurman by a paramilitary group fighting against the country’s military killed some 54 people and wounded many more, health authorities said Saturday.

Four paramilitary personnel were among five people killed when their vehicle was ambushed by the militants in Pakistan’s restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Sunday, police said. The incident happened in Dera Ismail Khan district bordering South Waziristan.

At least 54 civilians were killed at a market place in greater Khartoum on Saturday, according to a medical source, in a strike by the Sudanese paramilitary, who have been locked in conflict with the country’s regular army since April 2023.
