U.S. Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday said he would discuss trade and economic issues with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, after Washington decided to impose tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports and stirred fears of a trade war.

The European Union plans to retaliate against the United States for new steel and aluminum tariffs. "Unjustified tariffs on the EU will not go unanswered—they will trigger firm and proportionate countermeasures," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement late Monday.

The European Union’s executive branch on Feb. 14 vowed to “take firm and immediate action” against U.S. President Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminum.
