Super Bowl LIX was not a good night for the Chiefs offensive line and the prospect of improving their protection would look a lot dimmer if right guard Trey Smith is in a different uniform come September.

Similar to last year with pass rusher Chris Jones, GM Brett Veach acknowledged that re-signing Smith, 25, is the team’s top priority.

“The highest-paid guard in the NFL is Philadelphia’s Landon Dickerson at $21 million per year,” Schefter wrote. “The franchise tag for offensive linemen, projected just under $24 million, surpasses that by a few million— making Trey Smith the highest-paid guard in football.”
