Uganda has deployed special forces in South Sudan's capital Juba to "secure it", Uganda's military chief said on Tuesday, as tensions between South Sudan's president and first vice president stoke fears of a return to civil war.

Uganda has deployed an unknown number of troops to South Sudan in a bid to protect the fragile government of President Salva Kiir as a tense rivalry with his deputy threatens a return to civil war in the east African nation.

The United States has ordered all its non-emergency staff in South Sudan to leave, amid rising tensions in the country. Fighting in recent days has threatened an already fragile peace deal between President Salva Kiir and Vice-President Riek Machar.

The U.S. State Department has ordered nonemergency government personnel to leave South Sudan’s capital as tension escalates because of fighting in the north.

The travel advisory level for South Sudan remains at Level 4, which means Americans should not travel to the African country.
