The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season comes to a close Saturday, bringing an end to a season that saw 11 hurricanes compared to the average seven, billions of dollars in damage and deaths and destruction hundreds of miles from where storms came ashore on the U.

The Atlantic spawned 11 hurricanes this season, above the annual average of seven. Also above average was the number of major hurricanes, defined as Category 3 strength or higher on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale.

The season had 18 named storms, including 11 hurricanes – five of which turned into major hurricanes, according to NOAA.
